Message from the Executive Committee

 

The association has been fairly busy with both training seminars and Domestic Corporate Famtrips these past few months, in keeping with our mission to deliver more value educationals and introducing more buyers to members.
Moreover, TICA’s membership number keeps growing. To date, we have almost 300 members with us, see below for the latest membership updates. All highly positive signs of the relevance and importance the MICE industry sees in TICA’s work for the past 25 years.

 

TICA will be celebrating its 25th Anniversary on 27 October 2009 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre at the 16th Convention Promotion Seminar (CPS) & Conventions Exhibition (CONVEX)’s Cocktail Reception where we will rejoice in the association’s past achievements.

In keeping with the celebratory mood, commemorative Polo Shirts have been produced which will be used in the association’s various activities.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva Speaks to the Tourism Industry on

 “The Miracles of Tourism”

 

13 August 2009: Dusit Thani Bangkok

 

 

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva attended a special session to meet the tourism industry entitled, “The Miracles of Tourism” organized by FETTA at the Dusit Thani Bangkok on 13 August 2009.

  The Prime Minister displayed a keen interest in this business sector displaying his prowess and understanding on some of the main key points that have plagued the industry for the past few years, emphasizing some of the efforts that the government will be undertaking to assist with alleviating some of the pressures of the recent challenges.

 

Effort will be made to obtain the Prime Minister’s speech during the FETTA event, to be posted at the TICA website. TICA will advise members directly once this becomes available.

TICA President & Committee Chairpersons Meet Members in Bangkok & Phuket

TICA’s President, Khun Sumate Sudasna and the newly elected TICA Working Committee Chairpersons recently went on a tour to meet TICA members in both Bangkok , at the TICA Get-Together Lunchoen on 24 June 2009 at the Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok, and in Phuket, at the Metropole Hotel Phuket for a Dinner Talk on 10 July 2009.

  The social gathering featured the following sessions:

·   Meet TICA’s First President from the Private Sector, Khun Sumate Sudasna of CDM – Creative Destination Management

·   “The 8 National Strategic Plans to Reinvigorate the Tourism Industry 2552 – 2555 (2009-2012)”  proposed by the Ministry of Tourism & Sports: Session conducted by TICA President, Khun Sumate Sudasna

·   TICA Activity Report by Chairpersons of the Working Committees

·   Open Floor Forum: “Discuss Key MICE Issues of the Times and the Path & Positioning TICA Should Head Towards”

 

Both events in Bangkok and Phuket attracted a large crowd and discussion ensued on TICA’s role in the Thailand MICE industry in relevance to the current world environment and the nation’s political challenges amid the worldwide outbreak of the H1N1 flu.

With the successes of both the Bangkok and Phuket events, calls have been made by members in other regions for a similar programme to be held within their vicinity. TICA will advise members directly on future similar activities once plans have been confirmed.

New Member Orientation

4 June 2009: Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok

 


The latest additions to the TICA family were given a warm welcome and a brief orientation by the
TICA Membership & PR Committee headed by Khun Sukanya Janchoo as Chairperson.

The orientation saw one of the largest orientation numbers to date where a total of more than 29 new member organisations showed up to learn more about TICA and its services.

At the orientation, new members were introduced to their
“Buddy”. The Buddy Programme is a new initiative launched by the Membership & PR Committee where new members are assigned to committee members to help guide them through their first year as a TICA member.

The
Membership & PR Committee Co-Chairpersons; Khun Srisakun Footrakul and Khun Suriya Songsomboon were also present at the orientation.

TICA-TCEB Domestic Corporate Famtrips

 

TICA, in collaboration with TCEB conducted a total of 3 Domestic Corporate Famtrips to Hadyai, Phuket and Khon Kaen. Details concerning these trips are as follows:

 

Hadyai-Songkhla: 26-27 June 2009

 

TICA and TCEB brought a total of 17 invited buyers to review Hadyai and Songkhla as a potential MICE destination, the Prince of Songkhla University International Convention Centre (PSUICC) being the main focal convention centre for the trip which is managed by NCC Management & Development Co., Ltd.

  The group consisted of University Heads in charge of organizing seminars and conventions, both locally and internationally. Also included in the trip were members of the TEA. The trip was headed by Khun Sakchai Patarapreechakul, Vice President of NCC Management Co., Ltd.

  Included within the itinerary were visits to  the world’s largest reclining Buddha, Phra Buddha Hatta Mongkol at Wat Had Yai, atop Khao Hong for a scenic view of Songkhla which is also a religious site for Buddhists of Chinese descent with images of Kuan Yin and other Chinese deities.

 Among the highlights of the trip was the scenic Lunch Cruise onboard the Songkhla Jetty to view Koh Noo and Koh Maew, and the sumptuous local meals that the South is infamous for. Visits were also made to Old Songkhla Town on tricycles and the visit to the Institute for Southern Thai Studies.

 The group also visited local hotels in the area namely, BP Samila Beach Hotel & Resort, JB Hotel, Sakura Grand View Hotel, Novotel Centara Hat Yai and Rajamangkhla Pavilion Hotel.

Phuket: 31 July – 2 August 2009

 

TICA and TCEB organized a red carpet trip for 18 invited buyers that are young, up and coming CEOs in the corporate world.

 TICA’s President, Khun Sumate Sudasna and Khun Prachoom Chayabongse, Marketing Committee Chairperson accompanied this VIP group of CEO celebrities.

 The celebrities were taken on a posh itinerary that included hosted lunch at the Indigo Pearl, an exotic theme dinner at the Grotto on Pra Bang Beach at the Rayavadee, a cruise on board a yacht to visit the archipelago and wine tasting.

 The highlight of the itinerary being an overnight stay on Naga Island at the Six Senses Destination Spa Resort. The group also made a short stop to Koh Yao to donate stationary, used clothing & books and sports equipment to the local island school.

 It is hoped that the public relations and awareness created from the trip will spark off a wave that will make M&I activities in Thailand a hip and trendy concept.

Khon Kaen: 22 – 24 August 2009

 

TICA and TCEB took a group of 24 government agencies and public enterprises on a famtrip to Khon Kaen. This exciting trip gave this group of buyers who are mainly conventions and exhibitions organizers, an insight into the organizing an event in the country’ Northeastern region using Khon Kaen University’s Golden Jubilee Convention Centre (GJC) as the focal venue for events.

 The GJC is managed by NCC Management & Development Co., Ltd., and located within the Khon Kaen University grounds.

 The 3 day itinerary featured a visit to the impressive Sirindhorn Dinosaur Museum with its state-of-the-art dinosaur fossil displays, as well as a general history of the earth, in Kalasin. A visit was also made to the Ban Phone to see the traditional production of handmade silk, in particular the Phrae Wa Silk, considered the Queen of Silk, being the most complicated and difficult type of silk to be made and the traditional Bai Sri Blessing ceremony from villagers.

 A CSR activity was conducted here where the invited buyers helped plant Mulberry trees for the villagers who rear silk worms.

 The highlight of the trip was the theme dinner at Amphur Chonabot where guests were taken to a local  village that still leads a traditional life style. Guests were welcomed by a troupe of dancers and a local Esan Kaen band and lead to the surprise dinner venue; the local village square which was completely decorated and done up with colourful Esan style straw mats, throw pillows along with demonstrations of spinning traditional silk thread and Mudmee Silk weaving.

 Entertainment for the night included near extinct performances such as the Esan Style Thai Boxing Ballet, Kaen Therapy and much more. Dinner was served the traditional Esan style Khan Toke with typical local specialties.

 Another interesting aspect of the trip was the Progressive Dine Around at the Pullman Khon Kaen Raja Orchid which comprised of taking each course of a dinner at the various venues at the hotel with a lovely surprise finale performance by Khun Chiruit Issarangkul na Ayuthaya, TCEB’s Director – Government & Corporate Affairs at the Presidential Suite for dessert.

 Apart from taking in the local sites such as Phra That Nong Vaeng, Kaen Nakorn Lake and Old Khon Kaen, the buyers also visited the Hong Moon Mung City Museum.

 Visits were also made of local properties namely, Charoen Thani Princess Hotel, Pullman Khon Kaen Raja Orchid and Kosa Hotel.

 

A Table Top Sales session consisting of 24 exhibiting organizations was conducted for buyers to meet TICA members in the area, as well as other local suppliers.

 A free seminar entitled, “Meeting the Challenge in an Economic Downturn” by Khun Wiyada Sornprapa, Co-Chairperson of the TICA Marketing Committee was conducted prior to the start of the Table Top Sales session. The seminar provided attending exhibitors with ideas on possible sales and marketing tactics to consider in order to adapt to the current world business climate.

 This trip was conducted by CDM – Thailand.

Training Programme Review

 

 

Selling to the Corporate Meetings & Incentives Markets: Quality Sales Techniques

10-11 July 2009: Metropole Hotel, Phuket

 

 

TICA organised a training seminar entitled, “Selling to the Corporate Meetings & Incentives Markets – Quality Sales Techniques” by Eunice Gan on 10-11 July 2009 at the Metropole Hotel, Phuket designed for Junior level Sales Teams responsible for sales in the corporate meetings and incentives markets with a minimum 1 year experience in sales.

 The 5-session programme include training games that enhance creative thinking, effective listening skills, and motivation skills.

 

The training programme included TICA’s Services Development Committee Chaiperson, Khun Suvit Vanichprapa’s, panel session of industry experts to provide their input on the ideal sales person.

 

 

The panel consisted of, TICA President, Khun Sumate Sudasna; Khun Sukanya Janchoo, TICA Membership & PR Committee Chairperson; Khun Srisakul Footrakul, TICA Membership & PR Committee Chairperson, Khun NuntineeChuachoowongse and Khun Phenthip Chomprang, both of whom are members of the Services Development Committee.

 This popular seminar attracted as many as 50 participants.

Destination Management: Project Wow

4-5 August 2009: Grand Millennium Sukhumvit, Bangkok

 

 

Khun Bert van Walbeek conducted a training seminar for TICA entitled, “Destination Management: Project Wow” on 4-5 August 2009 at the Grand Millennium Sukhumvit, Bangkok ; a dynamic workshop, looking in-depth at selling the (MICE) destination, before even offering the services of your own organization!

The intensive course challenged participants to think out of the box, reconsider the values of their destination and come up with a destination programme grid that highlights the values of the country and the respective municipalities, thus bringing a smile of enlightenment on the face of the prospective buyer.

 

The highlight of this workshop was the group presentation to TICA Board of Directors who were invited to join the last session of this destination selling clinic as the Panel of Judges and then vote for the most creative grid and for the best presentation.

 TICA’s Secretary General, Khun Vanida Tullalamba, presented participants with their certificates of achievements. Khun Bert’s interactive seminar attracted 32 participants from all sectors of the TICA membership categories.
