Message from the Executive Committee

 

 

TICA had the pleasure to welcome H.E. Weerasak Kowsurat, Minister of Tourism and Sports at the recent TICA Luncheon at the Grand Hyatt Erawan. We were much honoured by the Minister’s presence as well as his attention to detail and the attending audience stating that, “If the tourism industry is a valuable jewel then the MICE sector would be the diamond crown on the setting” – an encouraging remark indeed. H.E. demonstrated his familiarity with the MICE industry with his informative presentation. H.E.’s keen sense and personal insight into both tourism and MICE alike does certainly give the industry a warm sense of assurance that we will all be sailing towards a brighter future.

 

Apart from the previously reported visits to potential congress organizers from associations and government agencies, as well as local corporate executives, TICA organized 2 Familiarisation Trips, first to Phuket-Khao Lak and the recent trip to Khao Yai. The professionalism demonstrated by TICA and participating members made such a good impression that we obtained a list of recommended colleagues in the HRD sector from the invited guests.

 

Most importantly ! The TICA Awards have been revived and will once again be part of the Convention Promotion Seminar (CPS) and Convention Exhibition (CONVEX), now in its 15th year, scheduled for 29-30 September 2008. Nominations are now being accepted so do send in your “event” for the award selection. Results of TICA Awards will be announced at the CPS & CONVEX function on 30 September 2008. H.E. Weerasak Kowsurat, Minister of Tourism & Sports at the 3rd TICA Get-Together Luncheon

H.E. Weerasak Kowsurat, Minister of Tourism and Sports delivered a speech on “Policy of Mainstream Tourism which Benefits the MICE Industry” at the TICA luncheon on 9 June 2008 at the Grand Hyatt Erawan, Bangkok. According to statistics, the MICE sector raised revenue of up to Baht 60 billion in 2006 from a recorded 800,000 MICE visitors. This demonstrates without a doubt that MICE is the high value visitors Thailand needs to approach more agressively. According to the Minister, this is the type of visitors that is in line with sustainable tourism in that the volume is not as high as general tourism therefore not taxing the local historical sites or environment.

 

More importantly, MICE groups not only contributes to the local economy as a whole but also provides tertiary benefits that leads to bringing in know-how and technology trasfer through international events which inevitably leads to raising the competiveness of not just the business industry but also education and social services making a “better” and more “qualified” Thailand to meet the challenges of international competition.

 

Based on his own research, the Minister noted that some of the incentives schemes set-up by the government has hardly

been utilised by both corporate executives for domestic events or by international organisers and planners which indicates a lack of relevance of these programmes. As such, the Minister will be reviewing these schemes and hopes to develop better and more varied incentives for both local and international planners and organisers alike, including the various customs and immigrations procedures which do affect the bid for international events into the country.

 

Also within H.E.’s speech was the presentation of 3 interesting new projects which are underway namely;

  • Developing the Petchburi Coast (Hua Hin/Cha-Am) to be the “Riviera” of the East in order to attract more high end visitors
  • Modernising and developing the local ports to better cater to Cruise Ships
  • Lighting up the Chaophaya River bank to enable night for a more pleasurable night time river cruise

 

With the enthusiasm and spirit the Minister demonstrated at the luncheon, as well as H.E.’s insight into MICE matters, he left the audience assured that the he is determined to improve government support to the MICE sector, as well as the travel industry, which gives us an idea of how much brighter the future for Thailand’s travel industry will be under his leadership.

TICA Corporate Familiarisation Trip

Phuket-Khaolak (24-26 April 2008) & Khao Yai (13 – 15 June 2008)

 

 

TICA has organised a series of Corporate Familiarisation Trips in recent months to help boost industry awareness of new products and opportunities. Below is a report on the previous 2 trips to Phuket-Khaolak and Khao Yai.

 

Phuket-Khaolak (24-26 April 2008). The trip to Phuket-Khaolak (24-26 April 2008) included 25 TICA invited buyers and 90 invited buyers from TAT, making a total of 115 invited corporate buyers. The trip included a Table Top Sales at the Mercure Patong Phuket where 120 industry suppliers were given the opportunity to promote their products and services to this group of buyers. Also included in the itinerary was site inspections of the Le Meridien Khao Lak, La Flora and Indigo Pearl. An Exhibitor and Organiser Training course with Eunice Gan was also included within the, as well as an incentive activity and charity activity (a donation for radio at Baan Nam Khem Community).

 

Khao Yai (13 – 15 June 2008). The second TICA Corporate Familiarisation Trip was organised to Khao Yai (13-15 June 2008) and included 24 invited corporate executives who met a total of 19 TICA member suppliers. The trip highlighted some of the area’s most interesting sites which included PB Winery, The Greenery Resort and Kirimaya Golf Resort and Spa. In addition to this, an exhibitor and organiser training course was conducted by Eunice Gan and Prachoom Chayabongse, along with a team-building activity at The Greenery Resort.

 

The next TICA Corporate Familiarisation Trips will be held to Suphanburi-Utaithani (25-27 July 2008) and Chiang Rai (17-19 October 2008).

Convention Promotion Seminar (CPS) & Convention Exhibition (CONVEX 2008)

29-30 September 2008

TICA members are invited to join the 15th Convention Promotion Seminar (CPS) and Convention Exhibition (CONVEX 2008). Formerly a biennial event, both the CPS and CONVEX will now be organised annually. This high profile event is the most important forum for the MICE industry where 150 – 200 invited buyers comprising of government officers, public organisations and local association executives attend a 1.5 day dynamic seminar on the benefits of bidding for/hosting an international event in Thailand. Also discussed are the various strategies in bidding and vote lobbying by experienced organisers who have successful bidded for and managed such events.

 

Mixed into this also the various management and operational tips on managing international events. The seminar also introduces buyers to the various categories of TICA professional members who specialise in catering to this group of buyers.

 

The CONVEX is held parallel to the CPS giving TICA members the opportunity to present their products and services to organisers. CONVEX is a table top style trade show for buyers to meet suppliers.

 

Also being featured this year is the re-introduction of the TICA Awards which recognises excellence in service for the MICE circle.

 

Registration deadline for both CPS & CONVEX is 25 August 2008.

TICA Awards

TICA invites its members to nominate notable events organised by their company between 1 January 2006 to 31 December 2007; this includes any events to which your company rendered services either acting as a PCO or event management company, etc. The winner of this prestigious award will be selected by respected personalities of the incentive, convention and exhibition industries led by TICA Services Development Committee.

Nomination Regulations:

1.  The nominated events must be held in Thailand at the period starting from 1 January 2006 to 31 December 2008.

2.  Events are classified into 5 categories as follows :

          Category A – National Convention Award

          Category B - International Convention Award

          Category C – Business Trade Exhibitions Award

          Category D - Incentive Travel Award (In-Bound)

          Category E - Domestic Incentive Award

          Category F - Best Event Award

3. Nominations Deadline: 29 August 2008

 

Winners of the TICA Awards will be announced at the 2008 CPS Farewell function on 30 September at the Centara Grand and Bangkok Convention Centre at CentralWorld.

TICA Appointment

 

 

TICA is delighted to announce the promotion of Prapaphan Sungmuang to Manager effective since 1 May 2008.

 

Prapaphan joined TICA 15 years ago under the position of Convention Services Co-ordinator and was subsequently promoted to Senior Administrative Executive in 2005 prior to her being appointed Manager. Prapaphan will be in charge of any office matters on behalf of the Executive Director. Her hard-work and dedication will contribute to the effective implementation of TICA’s projects.

TCEB recently organised Connection Plus – “Thailand Team Up !!” at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre on 30 June 2008 where 100 buyers from 12 countries (Australia, China, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, United Kingdom and USA) were invited to Thailand for a familiarisation of the products and services offered by the kingdom.

 

A table top “Buyer Meet Seller” session was also organised for MICE industry suppliers to promote their products and services to these international clientele.

Dr. Amnuay Viravan (front row: 4th right) led the members of University of Michigan Alumni (Thailand) in the welcome reception for the management from University of Michigan, Ann Arbour at Banyan Tree Bangkok.

 

The event was joined by honorable guests from Ministry of Foreign Affair, the US Ambassador and Thailand representatives of American companies originated in the state of Michigan. Endowment fund has been given to the university aiming to benefit Thai Study Program in the future.
